Alghero

Alghero is an old town, founded by the Genoese, which fell under Catalan rule in the early 14th century. The Catalan history of Alghero, or Alguer Vella (as its inhabitants still call the old town), had its beginnings in 1354, when, in the waters of Porto Conte, the Aragon fleets took the city from the Dorians of Genoa, in spite of their numerous attempts to resist invasion. The Genoese were forced to leave the town definitively in the hands of the new lords of Alguer (Alghero in Catalan) and this fortress town remained under Catalan rule until 1700. This long and important Catalan period can still be seen in the Gothic-Aragon architecture, the cobbled streets of the old town and in the language, the Catalan spoken by the people of Alghero.
