| Sardinia’s Beaches Sardinia, known as the Island of the Sea, has many beautiful coves and beaches which continue to draw visitors year after year. With 300 days of sunshine, soft white sands, clear blue water and beautiful scenery most people want nothing more than time to enjoy relaxing on the beach. From the well-known beaches of Costa Smeralda to the hidden coves at the end of unsignposted lanes, Sardinia has something to suit everyone, from families to those seeking a tranquil slice of paradise. North East Sardinia Best known for its beauty – both natural beauty and bikini-clad blondes – are the beaches at Olbia. Characterized by the wild-growing macchia shrubs and strangely shaped white granite rocks there are several lovely coves and bays which are mercifully unspoilt by the development which put Sardinia on the tourist’s map. The transparent green waters are perfect here for snorkeling and swimming. Choose from Golfo Aranci, Bados Beach, Portisco Beach, Pittulongu Beach, La Marinella, Porto San Paolo, Porto Istana Beach and Ira Beach. The rich and famous tend to favour the VIP beaches such as Liscia Ruia, Rena Bianca Beach, Romazzino and Razza di Giunco Beach around Porto Cervo in Costa Esmeralda. Spiaggia Bianca Beach is ideal for surfing, diving and snorkeling with its fine sand, clear water and beautiful views across to Tavolara Island. North West Sardinia This coast is well known for its national marine parks. The north west of Sardinia is an unspoilt area understandably named the ‘Port of Nymphs’ by the Romans. The protected marine area is part of the Alghero district, characterized by inaccessible areas which preserve the wild flora and fauna here. The Kharst cliffs lead down to many sea caves, some of which are submerged. The best known is the Nettuno Cave which is 2500 metres wide with an amazing saltwater lake inside. Pelosa Beach and La Speranza beach are the best known beaches here with extraordinarily white sand. La Pelosa Beach looks out to Asinara Island, a popular tourist destination, and is identified by its 17th century defense tower of La Pelosa. Popular with families there is a kiosk and restaurant here. Another popular family beach is La Speranza which has a thin line of brilliant sand running along the water’s edge. It is called the Beach of Hope for its small church built by seamen nearby. It is just 100 metres long with beautiful scenery and excellent spaghetti with lobster served at the beach restaurant. |
